Distinguishing a Torah Leader from a Feminist Politician

1. The Message of a Feminist Politician (they may even have the title “rabbi”):

  • The “agunah crisis” is the major Jewish crisis of our times.
  • We must unchain the suffering “agunot”!
  • All Gett refusal is abuse!
  • Mrs. Ploni (the plaintiff in a divorce lawsuit) is an innocent victim who must be supported.
  • Mr. Ploni (the defendant in a divorce lawsuit) is a “Gett refuser”, a persona non grata, and a rasha.
  • Ban Mr. Ploni and all Gett refusers from the synagogue.
  • Bring out the protesters to Mr. Poloni’s residence, get him fired from his job, boycott his business, get him evicted from his apartment!

2. The Message of a True Torah Leader :

“Hillel and Shammai received [the oral tradition] from them. Hillel used to say: be of the disciples of Aaron, loving peace and pursuing peace, loving mankind and drawing them close to the Torah.”

(Pirkei Avot 1:12)

“Bring peace between husband and wife”

(Avot DeRabbi Natan 12:1, rabbinic commentary on Pirkei Avot 1:12)

  • A true Torah leader will make diligent efforts to make peace between husband and wife and save as many Jewish marriages as possible.
  • A true Torah leader accepts that there is no arbitrary divorce on demand in Judaism, for either the husband or wife.
  • A true Torah leader will not force divorces or destroy Jewish families.
  • A true Torah leader will not publicly slander and embarrass Jews who are conducting a halachic divorce process.
  • A true Torah leader will not condone or support Jews who use civil courts in violation of Jewish law.
  • A true Torah leader recognizes that children require a healthy relationship with both parents, even if divorce has occurred.
  • A true Torah leader will not condone or support parental alienators.

Today we are an orphaned generation, where are our true Torah leaders?
